TMJ Therapy

Few dentists in the Atlanta area are trained and experienced to treat Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), a group of disorders that is often defined by poor range of motion and pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our Peachtree City dental office is home to several highly qualified dentists who have special training in the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ Disorders.

We employ the latest techniques and treatments to find conservative options that alleviate painful symptoms, such as frequent headaches, and restore lasting balance to the occlusal system- and a comfortable and functional bite.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF TMJ

The signs of TMJ Disorder are unique to the individual, making it a challenge for an untrained clinician to reach a diagnosis. Some of the more common signs or symptoms include:

  • Popping or clicking in the jaw
  • Locked jaw, difficulty opening the mouth
  • Pain when chewing, eating or opening wide
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Soreness or tiredness in the face or jaw

TMJ THERAPY

Just as the symptoms of TMD are unique to the individual, so is the therapy. Instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, our dentists take time to carefully listen to the individual, evaluate their condition, and create a personalized treatment plan. We may use one or several therapies to reach the best possible solution. The first line of therapy is usually an evaluation of the individual’s lifestyle. In some cases, symptoms can be controlled by making changes to daily habits or incorporating stress management technique into their daily routine.

Other times, professional intervention is needed. Our Peachtree city Dentist may use a mouth guard or a splint to bring the jaw joints into proper alignment. We may also perform bite correction procedures to change that alignment or fit of teeth. This could include removing or adding tooth structure through cosmetic bonding, porcelain veneers or dental crowns. We also offer Invisalign for discreetly straightening crooked teeth.

Vanessa M. Spencer

Fabulous practice! I have to add, my son chipped his tooth, he’s still at a fabulous pediatric dentist whom we love. They, however, don’t see patients for chips on Fridays. Even though my son isn’t a current patient, my husband and I are patients, they were able to squeeze him in the next day so he didn’t have to deal with it all weekend. Amazing customer service! They genuinely care about their patients and their families!

FAQ

What is TMJ treatment?

TMJ or Temporomandibular Disorders result in pain when moving the jaw. This can also include popping or clicking sounds, locking of the jaw, headaches, or chronic pain in the face, neck, and jaw areas.

Depending on the symptoms of TMJ, our dentist will develop a customized therapy plan. Often a combination of treatments, including lifestyle changes, stress management, behavior changes, and the addition of mouthguards, splints, or bite correction options, are used to align the teeth and bring the jaw into the correct position to take the stress off the joint. Botox is effective at reducing migraines, headaches, and face pain associated with the condition.

How much does TMJ treatment cost?

There are several different treatment options for TMJ. Treatments start with an evaluation to determine if lifestyle changes, mouth guards, splints, bite correction procedures, or a combination of therapies are the best options. The individual cost of the therapy will vary based on the personalized approach and treatment methods.

Does insurance cover TMJ treatment?

TMJ treatment coverage depends on the specific insurance provider and the policy. It also depends on the specific condition that causes the pain. For example, medical insurance may cover TMJ treatment if there is an underlying issue such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Dental insurance may cover TMJ treatments if the cause is dental in nature, which is typically a result of bruxism or grinding and clenching of the teeth. Talking to your dentist and doctor will help determine which type of claim is best.
